The Sponsored Projects Office (SPO) and the Industry Alliances Office (IAO) within Berkeley's Office of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances share responsibility for the coordination of extramural research on campus.
SPO coordinates submission of proposals and the negotiation and acceptance of awards for grants and contracts funded by federal and state agencies, foundations, and other public and private sources. Research policies and procedures, SPO publications, funding opportunities databases, and other extramural funding resources are available on the SPO website. SPO publishes the Research Advocate newsletter which lists upcoming funding opportunities and keeps the Berkeley research community informed of policy developments on the national research scene and within the University. Through SPO, the campus subscribes to two searchable funding opportunities databases (IRIS and Community of Science) that provide the campus with access to information on current program announcements in all fields from federal and regional government sponsors, foundations, and other organizations. SPO staff members provide help with searches and run individual funding searches for Berkeley faculty.
IAO is responsible for submission of proposals and negotiation and acceptance of research contracts with private industry including: corporate sponsored research agreements, material transfer agreements for the receipt of research materials and data from outside sources, corporate collaboration agreements, membership agreements in industry affiliates programs, and the in-licensing of research tools. IAO serves as a resource for faculty who are currently engaged with industry or who intend to have a relationship with industry.
SPO and IAO are also responsible for negotiation of subawards and collaboration agreements to organizations outside the University.
