Are there special grants for untenured ladder-rank faculty? prev next

Most untenured ladder-rank faculty are eligible for the grants and awards described in this website. Check with the grant or award administrator to confirm eligibility. In addition, untenured ladder-rank faculty may take advantage of the following opportunities.

The Office of the Chancellor offers a limited number of Regents Junior Faculty Fellowships to untenured ladder-rank faculty members for significant research, advanced or independent study, or improvement of teaching effectiveness. Fellowships offer summer salary awards of $5,000. The call for applications normally goes out in February or March of each year for the following summer.

The Committee on Research provides assistant professors (who have not exceeded three academic years in their tenure-track appointment) the opportunity to apply for Junior Faculty Research grants. These grants are intended to support junior faculty with the initial "seed" money associated with a major research project or creative endeavor. Awards are made on a competitive basis.

Established by F. Warren Hellman in 1995, the Hellman Family Faculty Fund supports substantially the research of promising assistant professors who show capacity for great distinction in their research. Mr. Hellman has observed that junior faculty are often well-funded when first hired, and that problems arise two to three years later, when start-up funding has been exhausted and before first grants are obtained. The Fund is designed to assist young faculty at this point in their careers. At least two-thirds of the funds allocated each year support assistant professors in the physical and life sciences and engineering; up to one-third can support assistant professors in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The maximum award is $50,000. Proposals should be submitted directly by individual faculty members to the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Faculty Welfare.

Women assistant professors are eligible for a Prytanean faculty grant of $15,000 to support their work, given annually since 1985.

Information about additional grants can be found at the Office for Faculty Equity website.
