The grade of Incomplete (I) may be assigned only to students who are doing passing work in your course but who are unable to complete the semesters work due to circumstances beyond their control; for example, illness, illness or death in the family, or a personal or family emergency. Responsibility for requesting and finishing an Incomplete rests squarely on the student. To complete the remaining work, the student should not formally re-enroll in the course. The original I will convert automatically to a grade of F or NP if the student formally repeats the course.
Instructors awarding an I grade must specify in a written statement to the
department chair
the reason for awarding the I grade, the nature of the work to be completed,
the percentage of the grade to be based thereon, and the grade earned up to
that point.
Instructors are expected to grade the work a student submits and to replace
the I grade. Report the replacement grade on the official petition form that
the student supplies. The student must submit the form and pay a fee before
the final grade can be officially entered on the students record.
Generally, undergraduate students must abide by the following schedule, although the dean of the students college, school, or division has the authority to extend these deadlines:
Session in which the I grade is received: Deadline for replacing the I grade:
Fall semester |
First day of instruction in the following fall semester
|
|
Spring semester/ summer session |
First day of instruction in the following spring semester
|
An I grade which has not been replaced by the deadline will be converted by the Office of the Registrar to the grade F (or NP if the course was taken Passed or Not Passed). An undergraduate student may choose to retain ("freeze") an I grade permanently on his/her record by the same deadlines. Once the I grade is frozen, the student may not repeat the course or unfreeze the I grade.
For the complete regulations governing Incomplete grades, refer to Berkeley Division Regulation A202.
