Can grades be posted or announced in class? prev next

Without first obtaining prior written consent from every student on the list, you cannot post a list of (or announce) student grades using the student ID number or name.

The disclosure of information from student records is governed by University policies and the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which is intended to protect the student’s right to privacy. Because grades and student ID numbers are confidential information, they cannot be disclosed without prior consent. You could, however, post grades if you use a code known only to you and the student. You can also refer students to the Bear Facts system to access their grades electronically. With E-Grades, students are able to view their grades within 24 hours of your submission of grades electronically to the Office of the Registrar.

If you have further questions regarding the disclosure of information from student records, contact the Office of the Registrar at 642-2261 or orreg@berkeley.edu.
