Cal Lecture Notes Online (642-1946) (formerly Black Lightning) is a note-taking service at Berkeley administered by the ASUC Auxiliary. With the advance permission of the professor, a qualified student note taker, usually majoring in the discipline, attends each lecture and submits professional notes. The notes are then edited and uploaded to the website, and delivered to student subscribers the day after class.
Notes are generally taken in classes enrolling 200 or more; professors can also request the note-taking service for smaller classes. Note taking can be requested by students or faculty after the semester has begun if needed, but most classes are approved several months before the semester begins. Faculty receive a free copy of the notes and may review, make comments, corrections, or suggestions at any time and/or suspend the note taking service if they wish. The professor can meet and interview the note taker if desired. Notes are edited and reviewed before being distributed.
Subscription prices for students range from $29 to $49 for the entire semester. Free notes are provided to students in the Disabled Students’ Program and to all tutors at the Student Learning Center.
