How are tenure decisions made? prev next

The Academic Personnel Manual provides information about specific procedural matters. Your department chair can best explain policies and practices in your department. It is important to note that research, teaching, and service are all factors in tenure decisions.

Two committees of the Academic Senate have prepared documents that help to explain the process of academic personnel review at Berkeley. The Committee on the Status of Women and Ethnic Minorities has prepared a "Guide for the Advancement and Promotion of Junior Faculty" that outlines the tenure review process, offers advice about developing a scholarly program, and gives contact information for people and offices that can offer additional advice about tenure. The Committee on Budget and Interdepartmental Relations has prepared an "Introduction to the Budget Committee" that describes academic review at Berkeley and the role the Budget Committee plays in making recommendations to the Administration. A scholarly program, and list persons and offices that advise about tenure.

The University offers a workshop on promotion and tenure annually (usually in the fall semester) to assistant professors; various administrative officers speak about their roles in the review processes and what it takes to achieve tenure at Berkeley. Contact the Academic Personnel Office at 642-5626 or by e-mail at APpolicy@berkeley.edu for more information.
