What are American Cultures courses? prev next

The American Cultures Breadth Requirement is a campus-wide requirement for all undergraduate degrees. Undergraduates must pass one approved American Cultures ("AC") course to fulfill the requirement.

The courses that satisfy this requirement are integrative, comparative, and address theoretical and analytical issues relevant to understanding race, culture, and ethnicity in American history and society. Each course must take substantial account of groups drawn from at least three of the following: African Americans, indigenous people of the United States, Asian Americans, Chicano/Latinos, and European Americans.

The Academic Senate's American Cultures Subcommittee approves courses to fulfill the American Cultures requirement. General information about the American Cultures requirement can be found on the Academic Senate's website. Detailed information about American Cultures curricula can be found on the American Cultures Center's website.

Faculty interested in developing an American Cultures course should contact Victoria Robinson (642-2264, victoriarobbi@berkeley.edu) for advice on course development and planning.

Students with questions about fulfilling the AC requirement should speak with their academic advisors.
