The Academic Senate has developed guidelines (PDF) for instructors and students to address the issue of scheduling conflicts between academic obligations and other commitments, such as athletic competitions, recruitment interviews, and musical performances.  While it is ultimately the instructor's responsibility to maintain her/his standards of in-class participation, instructors are encouraged to keep these guidelines in mind when working with students who are experiencing scheduling conflicts to help maintain a degree of equity and consistency across the campus.
