Although appointments for assistant professors, associate professors, and professors are usually full time, you may reduce your service to part time, temporarily or permanently, with your departments consent. Recent policy changes provide for such reductions to acknowledge family responsibilities.
Service as a part-time assistant professor (regardless of the percentage of time) counts toward the eight-year maximum service under this title. Part-time employment also reduces the rate at which credit is accrued for various University fringe benefits and retirement. Part-time professors retain their status and voting privileges in the Academic Senate.
If you are initially hired on a part-time appointment, or subsequently reduce your appointment percentage, the University is not obligated to increase your percentage time, even if you and your department desire it.
The policy and procedures governing part-time appointments for lecturers are subject to negotiation between the University and the University Council - American Federation of Teachers Local 1474. An Instructional Workload Credit is calculated for each course and varies by department.
