Berkeley has an array of titles in both the professorial and the non-Senate faculty categories. Professorial titles are given to faculty members who are responsible for teaching, doing research, and performing University and public service. The three tenure-track professorial titles, also called "ladder-rank" positions, are:
Assistant professor. Untenured faculty members receive two-year appointments at this rank. Service is limited to eight years in this title.
Associate professor. Tenured faculty normally hold this rank for six years. However, the University is not obligated to promote anyone to full professor simply on the basis of years of service.
Professor. This title is accorded tenured faculty at the highest academic rank.
Other faculty may be appointed in the following title series: adjunct professor, clinical professor, professor-in-residence, and visiting professor. See the Academic Personnel Manual, section 112-4 for descriptions of these titles.
Non-Senate faculty (primarily lecturers) are hired to perform certain teaching duties, often for limited periods or part time, and are not required to perform research or creative work as condition of employment. The title senior lecturer is assigned to appointees who qualify as lecturers, but who provide services of exceptional value to the University and receive a salary at the professor level. Lecturers are covered by a Memorandum of Understanding and are exclusively represented by the University Council - American Federation of Teachers Local 1474.
