What services are available for students with disabilities? prev next

The Disabled Students’ Program (DSP, 642-0518) offers a wide range of services for eligible students with verified disabilities. These services are individually designed, and are based on the individual needs of students as identified by their Disability Specialist. DSP’s services include academic accommodations, attendant referral, assistive technology, disabled student grants, financial and course advising, and groups and special classes for students with disabilities. For students with physical disabilities who require attendant care the Disabled Students' Residence Program (DSRP) provides a unique opportunity to participate academically at a major university while developing the skills and confidence needed to live independently.

Based on students’ particular disabilities, disability-related learning needs, and the academic requirements of a course, DSP Specialists may write letters to instructors recommending accommodations on assignments or tests. Following are some examples of possible course-specific disability-related accommodations:

• Assistive listening devices

• Assistive technology

• Auxiliary services (notetakers, laboratory and research assistants, readers, amanuenses, etc.)

• Course or program modifications

• Exam modifications (alternative test formats, use of computer or basic calculator, private/quiet exam room, etc.)

• Extended time for assignments, exams, etc.

• Real time captioning

• Sign language interpreters
