What should I do if I suspect an academic violation has occurred? prev

If you suspect a student of an academic violation, you should discuss the matter with the student. If you have hesitations or questions, talk with an experienced colleague, your department chair, and/or Student Judicial Affairs before meeting with the student. If your suspicions are allayed, the matter can be dropped. If the student disputes the allegation but you still suspect a transgression, you can request an investigation by your department chair or the Office of Student Judicial Affairs (643-9069). If the student admits to the violation, you may impose academic penalties. Instructors may directly impose penalties of change of grade, assignment of additional work, or re-examination. You may also recommend disciplinary sanctions.

Although some faculty members feel that academic violations are best handled informally, it is helpful if cases of academic dishonesty are reported to the Office of Student Judicial Affairs. Only through such reports can the campus identify repeated violations and chronic offenders, monitor campus trends, and assure consistent penalties.

The Office of Student Judicial Affairs investigates all allegations of academic violations and resolves each case either by dismissal of charges, mutually acceptable administrative dispositions, or referral for a formal hearing.
