Students may approach you with nonacademic questions, concerns, or requests for advice. For help in answering questions about campus services and programs, Resource: A Reference Guide for New Berkeley Students, is an excellent handbook.
Students often share personal difficulties with their professors during office hours and through e-mail correspondence. It is not uncommon for faculty to become aware of students’ family issues, financial concerns, health problems, and relationship difficulties as well as mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. If a student comes to you with a personal problem, the best response is to talk to the student about the professional counselors at Counseling and Psychological Services at University Health Services, Tang Center, 2222 Bancroft Way, 642-9494.
