Berkeley's students have a variety of overlapping and multiple identities, and the campus has developed a range of services to address the needs of specific groups to assist in their academic success. Following is a list of services that provide academic support, services, and a sense of place to Berkeleys diverse and varied student populations.
Multicultural students. The following offices provide a variety of projects to promote student academic success, encourage ethnic-specific and cross-cultural programs, and provide support for students of color, immigrant, and refugee students:

Low-income, first-generation-college students. Student Life Advising Services/Educational Opportunity Program (642-7224) offers academic, personal, financial, and career counseling/advising to students from socioeconomically disadvantaged and culturally diverse backgrounds, as well as transitional workshops and seminars, a resource orientation reception for new undergraduates, graduate and professional preparatory courses, programs for students experiencing academic difficulty, achievement awards, and financial assistance. Academic
Achievement Programs (642-7935) provides transition assistance,
academic advising, orientation/support courses, tutoring, computer
skills instruction, and other services to students from low-income
backgrounds who are the first generation in their family to attend
college and who qualify for the program.
Student-athletes. The Athletic Study Center (642-8402) provides academic support services for student-athletes including tutorial programs, advising, computing services, career development, and summer programs.
Students with disabilities. The Disabled Students Program (642-0518) provides individually designed academic accommodations and auxiliary services such as note takers, sign language interpreters, a residential housing program for new students with severe physical disabilities, disability-related advising and peer mentoring, and assistive technology.
Women and Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Intersex Queer (LBGTIQ) students. The Gender Equity Resource Center (GenEq) (642-4786) provides programs, services, and resource information that increase knowledge, awareness, and understanding of gender identity, sexual orientation, sex and gender identity, relationship violence, sexual violence, and bias-related incidents. GenEq has four program areas, including LGBT Programs and Services (643-0788) that offers resources, programs, advising, and referrals and provides positive visibility, support, and retention of LGBTIQ and questioning students; and Women's Programs & Services (643-5727) that provides information, support services, and resources for women at Cal.
The Transfer, Re-Entry, and Student Parent Center provides services for these three diverse and often interconnected populations, including academic courses for credit, academic skills workshops, distinguished faculty series, leadership development, advising, community events, outreach, and internships. Transfer Student Programs and Services provide services for newly admitted and continuing transfer students and assists with the transition to campus life as well as providing ongoing support. Re-entry Student Programs and Services provide services to students who are resuming their students after an absence, emphasizing students teaching and learning together and promoting scholarly connections. Student Parent Programs and Services offers services for students who are combining school and parenting; it generates support for student families on campus, organizes specialized programs, and provides a forum for information exchange.
Student groups. Each year Berkeley students register hundreds of student groups with the Office of Student Life (642-5171) that address every aspect of their identities and interests as students, including fraternities and sororities, honors groups, educational, cultural, social, and political groups.
