Where can I refer students who need help choosing a career? prev next

There are a number of campus resources to assist students in choosing a career and/or preparing for graduate or professional school. The primary service for students is the Career Center (642-1716), which has a webpage providing faculty and staff resources to help you make effective student and employer referrals to the Center.

The Career Center prepares undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni to make informed decisions about their futures by providing comprehensive resources, programs, and counseling on career development, internships, employment, and graduate school. Highlights of services include:

Career Counselors are available for 45-minute and 15-minute mini appointments.

Workshops, Programs, and Career Fairs offer topics including career assessments, career options, graduate school, internships, interviews, resumes, and job search strategies. The Career Center holds more than 15 career and graduate school fairs each year.

Internships: The Career Center provides counseling, resources, and workshops on full-time and summer internships with for-profit and nonprofit employers.

CalJobs On-Campus Recruiting and Job Listings: Nearly 360 employers hold 8,500 on-campus interviews for full-time and summer employment. On any given day, employers post over 1,000 part-time, full-time, and summer on- and off-campus jobs and internships.

Graduate School Services offer counseling, resources, workshops, and the Letter Service Online for students applying to graduate or professional school.

Graduate Student and Ph.D. Services include counseling, resources, and workshops for graduate students pursuing academic positions and options beyond academia.

Alumni Advantage membership provides recent Cal grads with a comprehensive set of career services to help them find jobs, apply to graduate school, or explore their options.

Other campus resources include:

Counseling and Psychological Services (642-9494) at University Health Services has an extensive career counseling program, including personality and interest testing, career counseling, and the Career Counseling Library (642-2367). The library collection includes graduate school catalogs, computerized assessment tools, and state-of-the-art career information. Often students go to CPS first to identify possible career directions and to deal with conflicts between personal goals and family expectations.

The California Alumni Association's Career Services Resource Center (643-9502) provides career assistance services and programs for students and alumni that include:

• Networking opportunities and events

• Career exploration, job listings, and job search tools
