Students who feel they have been treated unfairly on the basis of race, sex, or disability can contact the following offices:
The Office of the Ombuds for Graduate and Undergraduate Students and Postdoctoral Appointees (642-5754) provides informal and impartial conflict resolution services, including informal mediation. The Ombuds operates as a designated neutral and independent agent of justice in any University-related matter impacting students or postdoctoral appointees, including academic as well as administrative concerns. All matters referred to this office are held in strict confidence. The only exceptions, at the sole discretion of the Ombuds, are cases where there appears to be imminent threat of serious harm. The Ombuds for Students and Postdoctoral Appointees is not an office of notice for the University regarding such matters.
The Director of Campus Climate and Compliance, who serves as the Title IX/VI Compliance Officer (643-7985) monitors the University's efforts to comply with the provisions of Title IX that prohibit sex discrimination and sexual harassment and Title VI that prohibit racial discrimination and racial harassment. The Title IX/VI Officer serves as the Complaint Resolution Officer and campus investigator for faculty, staff, and student complaints concerning sexual and racial harassment, sexual and racial assault, stalking, and rape.
The Disability Resolution Officer handles student concerns and complaints about failure to accommodate and other types of disability discrimination, or can direct you to the appropriate campus resource. Contact the DRO at 642-2795 or esc@berkeley.edu.
The Gender Equity Resource Center (642-4786) provides policy information, options for informal resolutions, and response and support services for sex discrimination, including sexual harassment, stalking, sexual assault, and rape, as well as forms of hate and bias-related incidents. The staff work in conjunction with the Title IX/Sexual Harassment Officer on these issues.
