The Senate faculty are not unionized, but faculty members may join and participate in employee organizations or unions of their choice.

Lecturers are represented by the University Council - American Federation of Teachers, Bargaining Unit 18. Lecturers are hired to perform certain teaching and other duties as required by the contract and are not required to perform research as a condition of employment. The terms and conditions of employment governing appointments for lecturers are subject to negotiation between the University and the University Council - American Federation of Teachers Local 1474. The Memorandum of Understanding between the University and the UC-AFT can be viewed online.

Librarians, Bargaining Unit 17, are also represented by the American Federation of Teachers.
