As a teacher, a faculty member encourages the free pursuit of learning in each student; holds before the student the best scholarly standards; demonstrates respect for the student as an individual; adheres to the role of intellectual guide and counselor; fosters honest academic conduct and assures that his or her evaluations of students reflect each students true merit; respects the confidential nature of the relationship between professor and student; avoids exploitation, harassment, or discriminatory treatment of students; acknowledges significant academic or scholarly assistance from students; and protects the students academic freedom. These ethical principles are presented in the Academic Personnel Manual (APM 015, Section II, Part II) based on the Statement of Professional Ethics issued by the American Association of University Professors in 1966 and revised in 1987.
The University has a responsibility to foster conditions that allow you to pursue your goals as a scholar, teacher, and member of professional and civic communities. These conditions, set forth in the Academic Personnel Manual (APM 015, Section II, Part I), include the free inquiry and exchange of ideas, the right to present controversial material relevant to instruction, the enjoyment of constitutionally protected freedom of expression, participation in University governance, and the right to be judged by your colleagues.
Along with its responsibility to faculty members, the University also has the authority to enforce discipline. The kinds of behavior that may be subject to University discipline are described in the Academic Personnel Manual and include, but are not limited to, discrimination on the basis of politics, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, national origin, ancestry, marital status, medical condition, status as a veteran, age, citizenship, or other arbitrary or personal reason; failure to meet the responsibilities of instruction; misuse of position or power to coerce the judgment or conscience of a student; intellectual dishonesty; knowing violation of University policy; intentional disruption of University functions or activities; and unauthorized use of University resources. The Academic Personnel Manual Faculty Code of Conduct (APM 015, Section II) describes the types of unacceptable conduct and disciplinary actions that may be taken.
