How can I find out what’s happening at Berkeley? prev next

The campus uses electronic communication to keep faculty and staff informed. Information from the Chancellor and other senior administrators is sent electronically through the CALmessages system. Your department or college may also have an e-mail distribution system for news and announcements.

The following websites and publications, distributed free of charge throughout the campus and in many department offices, provide information on campus news and current issues:

The UC Berkeley NewsCenter is updated daily (sometimes hourly) and provides a broad and deep account of the intellectual life here on campus. The NewsCenter has sections for campus news, that day's press coverage of UC Berkeley, sports, and a listing of campus events. NewsCenter stories are categorized by subject, allowing visitors to browse the latest news in fields that interest them - from Arts and Humanities to Health and Medicine to Technology and Engineering. Visitors also can sign up for e-mail delivery of breaking news in any of 15 fields of interest.

The UC Berkeley campuswide calendar features a Critic's Choice of highlighted campus events for the upcoming 7-10 day period. This calendar also allows readers to see a listing of many of that day's events on campus, to see what events are listed for a future date, or to search the calendar database for a particular event.

Berkeleyan, the weekly campus newspaper for faculty and staff, features news items and announcements as well as an extensive calendar of concerts, exhibits, films, lectures, seminars, performances, and workshops. It is published every Thursday during the academic year and once a month in the summer. In some departments it is placed in your mailbox; in others it is distributed on counters in the main office.

The Daily Californian, an independent newspaper not sponsored by the University, covers the campus and the community and carries a schedule of lectures, entertainment, and special events. It is published Monday through Friday during the academic year, and two times a week in the summer. Daily Cal newsstands are located throughout the campus and the city.

Minutes of the Official Meetings of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate are sent directly to all members of the Berkeley Senate. Nonmembers are added to the mailing list upon request; ask the administrative assistant in your department.

The California Monthly, published six times a year by the California Alumni Association, is distributed to members of the Alumni Association, faculty, and administrators of the UC System though departments. The Monthly features news reports on University life and a regular calendar of events.

BAM/PFA Art & Film Notes is a comprehensive bi-monthly guide to programs and exhibits at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, including nightly film screenings, exhibition tours, and lecture series. Pick up a copy in front of the museum or PFA theater, from racks at the entrances to Moffitt and Doe Libraries, or visit the website.

Information about Cal Performances, which presents world-class musicians, dancers, and theater artists plus literary, cultural, and political speakers in Zellerbach Hall and Playhouse, Hertz Hall, Wheeler Hall, the Hearst Greek Theatre, and First Congregational Church, can be obtained from the online calendar and current brochure. For a brochure and ticket information, stop at the Zellerbach Hall Ticket Office, call Cal Performances at 642-9988, or go to the website above.

Many departments, schools, and administrative units also publish newsletters and have electronic mailing lists; contact the individual office for more information.
