What is the University Seal? prev next

The 1884 Orders of the Regents stated that the University of California seal "shall be of the size of a Mexican dollar, and the legend around the rim shall be `University of California Organized 1868.’" The seal designed by Tiffany and Company in 1910 bears in addition the Latin motto Fiat Lux. Sometime between 1949 and 1953, a seal bearing the English translation, "Let there be light," came to be used and has remained in use to this day.
